2025 NFL Draft Prospect Primer: Running Backs

The calendar has officially turned to April, meaning all eyes are set on Green Bay, Wis., and the 2025 NFL Draft. Over the next few weeks, we will take a look at some expert breakdowns of the top prospects entering this year's draft, position by position:

RB | LB | WR | DB | IOL | DT | QB | OT | EDGE | TE

Let's start with the running backs.

Names of Note

No. 3: RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State

Ashton Jeanty - Boise State

Measurables

Height - 5'8 ½"
Weight - 211 lbs
Arm - 29 ¼"
Hand - 9 ¼"

Prospect Overview

Jeanty was First-team Associated Press All-American and a Hesiman finalist in 2024 after leading the NCAA with 2,601 rushing yards and 7.0 yards per carry.

Rankings and Analysis

"Jeanty is a total-package backfield playmaker with impressive balance, footwork, vision, explosiveness and big-play ability -- reminiscent of Alvin Kamara. He is a first-round offensive weapon who can succeed behind any blocking scheme."

"He's the ultimate yardage creator, with the talent and skill set to succeed independent of the quality of his blocking…This top-flight running back is capable of becoming the face of an offense in a league where the pendulum might be swinging back to the running game. Jeanty has future All-Pro talent."

"Jeanty's ability to break tackles is his superpower, and his core strength is excellent. His 2,601 rushing yards in 2024 ranked second in NCAA history behind Barry Sanders for the most in a single season. Jeanty stiff-arms and sheds defenders who fail to wrap up his legs. He is a patient runner who presses the line of scrimmage, gets linebackers to commit, makes a cut and then explodes upfield. "

No. 13: RB Omarion Hampton, North Carolina

Omarion Hampton - North Carolina

Measurables

Height - 6'0"
Weight - 221 lbs
Arm - 30 ½"
Hand - 9 ⅜"

Prospect Overview

Hampton was Second-team Associated Press All-American, First-Team All-ACC and Finalist for Doak Walker Award (nation's top RB) in both 2023 and 2024. He ranked third in FBS in 2024 with 2,033 all-purpose yards and 1,660 rushing yards.

Rankings and Analysis

Pro Football Focus: No. 24 overall (No. 2 RB) "Hampton is one of the class' most physically gifted running backs with his combination of size, explosiveness and lower-body strength. He can be a productive slasher type of runner behind zone schemes, but his overall vision could make him a boom-or-bust producer, depending on his offensive line."

"High-volume battering ram with a three-ingredient recipe of size, strength and aggression. Hampton is a linear runner lacking creativity and wiggle, but once the gas is engaged, he runs like a downhill truck whose brake lines have been cut… Hampton is a tone-setting future starter who can handle a heavy workload."

"Hampton's blend of power, quickness and speed is impressive. He runs behind his pads and bursts through narrow seams between the tackles. He runs through, glances and spins off tacklers. He ranked third in the nation in rush yards after contact with 1,026."

No. 34: RB TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State

TreVeyon Henderson - Ohio State

Measurables

Height - 5'10"
Weight - 202 lbs
Arm - 30 ¾"
Hand - 9 ½"

Prospect Overview

Henderson was the No. 1 RB recruit coming out of high school. He was named Freshman All-American and Second-team All-Big Ten in 2021 at Ohio State. Henderson was First-team All-Big Ten in 2023 and Third-team All-Big Ten and team captain in 2024.

Rankings and Analysis

"Henderson, when playing confidently, shines with his agility and long speed. He lacks some size for tackle-breaking and pass-blocking, but he remains a high-effort player in those areas. He seems like a good speed component of an NFL committee, including for receiving work out of the backfield."

NFL.com (Daniel Jeremiah Top 50): No. 34 overall (No. 3 RB) "Henderson is capable of starring on third downs or biting off a bigger chunk as a three-down option. He has average size but above-average juice with good acceleration… He might be the best pass-protecting running back in this draft and is more than capable as a pass-catcher."

ESPN: No. 31 overall (No. 3 RB) "Henderson averaged 7.1 yards per carry in 2024 -- eighth-best mark in FBS -- and tested well at the combine… His burst between the tackles and turning the corner jump out on tape. He's a threat to pull away when he gets a seam. Henderson runs angry, and he has the contact balance to break tackles and even make defenders miss."

No. 38: RB Quinshon Judkins, Ohio State

Quinshon Judkins - Ohio State

Measurables

Height - 6'0"
Weight - 221 lbs
Arm - 30 ¼"
Hand - 9 ¼"

Prospect Overview

Judkins was First-team All-SEC at Mississippi in 2022 and 2023 and SEC Freshman of the Year in 2022. He transferred to Ohio State and was Third-team All-Big Ten in 2024.

Rankings and Analysis

"Judkins is a strong north-to-south runner who generates impressive speed-to-power for consistent yards after the catch. However, his game lacks the creativity needed to consistently win in the NFL, independent of his offensive line. Behind a good line, he could rack up yards. Behind a subpar one, he could struggle to stand out."
NFL.com (Daniel Jeremiah Top 50): No. 38 overall (No. 4 RB)

"Judkins is a productive runner possessing good size and great contact aggression. His running style is both urgent and a bit chaotic. He runs with good burst inside but is more collision-based than wiggle-oriented when maneuvering through the lane… Judkins might need to be paired with a slasher, but he has the ingredients needed to become a three-down RB1."

"Judkins was the only running back to broad jump 11 feet at the combine, and he tied the second-fastest 10-yard split (1.51 seconds) and the third-best vertical (38.5 inches) at the position. Those numbers speak to the lower body explosiveness he shows on tape when he bursts through the line and breaks through tackles."

No. 45: RB Kaleb Johnson, Iowa

Kaleb Johnson - Iowa

Measurables

Height - 6'1"
Weight - 224 lbs
Arm - 33"
Hand - 9 ⅝"

Prospect Overview

Johnson was named second-Team Associated Press All-American, Big Ten RB of the Year, First-team All-Big Ten and Finalist for the Doak Walker Award (nation's top RB) in 2024. He also set a school record with 23 total TDs in 2024.

Rankings and Analysis

"Johnson is a physically gifted running back who excels with the ball in his hands. As an early-down player, he can be successful behind any blocking scheme with good vision, light footwork and impressive burst and power. However, his lack of polish and reliability in third-down situations could keep him from being an every-down running back."

"Johnson is built like a bruiser, but his style is more finesse, preferring to win with tempo and decisiveness. He keeps his runs on time and on track while allowing blockers to do their job… Johnson's traits and running style make him a projectable fit in a two-back system with the upside to take on a bigger chunk down the road."

"Johnson is a big back who rushed for a career-high 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2024. He's an instinctive zone runner with a great feel for when to stick his foot in the ground and get downhill. He didn't test as well, but he is quicker on tape than the numbers would suggest. And he doesn't need much of a seam to split defenders between the tackles."

Cam Skattebo - Arizona State

Measurables

Height - 5'9 ½'

Weight - 219 lbs

Arm - 29 ⅞'

Hand - 9 ⅜"

Prospect Overview

Skattebo was a First-team Associated Press All-American and First-team All-Big 12 after ranking second in the FBS with a school-record 1,711 rushing yards in 2024. He finished fifth in Heisman voting and was awarded Peach Bowl Offensive MVP in College Football Playoff quarterfinal loss to Texas.

"Skattebo plays the game in a manner that is easy to love: with a massive chip on his shoulder. NFL teams will gravitate toward his mentality, balance, tackle-breaking ability and after-contact consistency. He has the physical makeup of a three-down back."

"Skattebo is a football player through and through, as he routinely gives his all no matter his role… Skattebo could thrive in a number of NFL systems as the last piece to an offensive puzzle. The only question I have about him is his game speed, but he has the potential to be a Day 1 starter with the right team."

"Skattebo is the first FBS player since Christian McCaffrey in 2015 to have at least 1,500 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in a single season. He has outstanding core strength and excellent balance -- he can break multiple tackles over the course of one run."
