Bengals release Wharton

After playing just two preseason snaps and tearing his ACL on the third, Travelle Wharton saw his brief career with the Bengals come to an end Monday when they terminated his contract and released him three days before the first practice of training camp.

Wharton, 32, a proven NFL starter at guard and tackle, had signed a three-year deal in 2012 free agency to start at left guard. But his injury pushed second-year man Clint Boling into the lineup and Boling responded with a solid season. Then with the strong spring camp of fifth-rounder Tanner Hawkinson, a tackle from Kansas who is also playing guard, the Bengals appear to be opting with youth as they work out their backup roles in camp.
