Pick: Round Two, 49th Overall
Name: Demetrius Knight
Hometown: Locust Grove, Georgia
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 235 lbs
Arm: 32 ⅝"
Hand: 10"
College career stats (from College Football Reference:) 61 GP, 229 total tackles, 17 tackles for loss, four interceptions, five forced fumbles, one defensive touchdown.
College Highlights: Dove and caught his lone interception just inside the 30 on 2nd-and-10 up 17-14 against Clemson, when the Tigers attempted to win the game with 12 seconds left … sack against Alabama's Jalen Milroe on third-and-5 … in the win vs. Oklahoma, he had 11 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles and read a trick play to stop a fourth-down play ….
Bengals Reaction: "He's the MVP of one of the best defenses in the country... This guy is hard to find. They don't make them this long. He's got enough length to go to the edge if you go to a five-down look. That's a pivotal piece for us. Just a competitor." - DC Al Golden
"It felt a lot like waiting for Logan (Wilson) a couple of years ago and just letting all of those picks tick off. He's a tremendous fit for us and someone that we had an extremely high opinion of. We're very thankful that he was there when we picked. He walks in the door mature, a leader. So many people that we talked to said this was one of the favorite people that they've been around. Just the leadership qualities, the football intangibles, the football makeup and the talent that he's got. He's going to walk in the door and fight for a way to contribute immediately and I'm fired up to watch that happen.: - HC Zac Taylor
Player Reaction: "I would describe my game as nasty. I like to say that when I'm going out there on the field I like to hunt, because if I don't hunt my family doesn't eat. I become the hunter out there once I say goodbye to my family and put that helmet on. That's when I switch to the mentality that I have to go hunt and I'm going to do whatever it takes to make sure that we come back with a win." - Demetrius Knight Jr.
""I know when quarterbacks are coming to the line. I know what they're looking at when they come to the line. I know they're looking for safeties, if we're going to show our rotation or if we're going to try and hold it. I know what it can look like from man-to-man standpoint or coverage standpoint. Give quarterbacks a different look at snap and post-snap to give him different reads and falling right into our hands. So, giving him different looks as I come to the line. I'm looking at safety, communicating to our defense — just doing things to mess with their mind." - Knight Jr. on his quarterback past
Draftnick Takes: "Passionate linebacker with great size, good instincts and a feel for how to play the position. Knight is a fluid athlete. He uses his eyes and instincts to diagnose quickly and he maneuvers around bodies like a running back. He's adept at slipping blocks and rarely allows blockers to stick and sustain on the second level." - NFL.com
How Does He Fit?: Knight is a sideline-to-sideline, physical linebacker who will continue to help bolster the run defense after the additions of DT T.J. Slaton Jr. in free agency and EDGE Shemar Stewart in the first round of the NFL Draft. He will be in the mix with free agent acquisition Owen Burks to earn immediate playing time at linebacker next to Logan Wilson and could also contribute immediately on special teams.
Age is more than a number: Knight on being a 25-year-old rookie: "I believe it gives me an edge. I tell a lot of guys that's my edge because I have a wife. I know other young guys who have wives, as well. My family is my life. They allow me to do what I do. Being able to play in college as long as I did, I've seen a good bit of football, so I'm not a guy who teams will have to babysit, hold hands with. I'm a guy they can put in there on Day 1, Day 2, wherever they need me so I can provide for the team, get on that field and cause a lot of trouble."
Did You Know?: Knight Jr. is married with two kids... He once broke a rim during a slam dunk in a basketball game … His cousin, DeAngelo Hall, who was an all-America defensive back at Virginia Tech who went on to be selected with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and become a three-time Pro Bowler during a 14-year pro football career with the Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins… Knight is also a distant cousin of R&B legends Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin.
