Despite coming off his first career scoop, Mo Wells has no plans to drop any major headlines of change when it comes to offseason coverage of the greatest wide receiver in the game.
Probably a wise move after Ja’Marr Chase re-wrote the programming of the position when he led the league last season in everything from catches to celebrations.
Wells, director of the Dallas-based Pro and Elite Sports training facility who hosts a Pro Bowl skills competition every day of the offseason, is faced with mimeographing magic before handing Chase off next month to Bengals strength and conditioning coach Joey Boese.
What's a goal-setter to do for an encore when he's reached every individual goal?
"When you hit everything, you try to do it again. That's what you do," Wells says. "I'm not going to adjust much. We saw success. You don't have to reinvent the wheel when you see that type of success. I think the biggest part is just showing up every day.
"My main thing is health. I just want you to show up every day and work your ass off so you can be healthy. That's my main thing. Numbers will always take care of themselves. Health is wealth to me. We couldn't get you paid like that if we couldn't keep you healthy."
Wells doesn't have to worry about Chase being there every day. He's back in the building following the offseason's last hurrah in Miami savoring last week's biggest deal ever signed by a player who does everything with a football but throw it.
"It's rare you get the size, genetic capability, genetic athletic talent, along with the work ethic. It's really rare, right?" Wells says. "And if you do see a work ethic and athletic ability, they're missing something. They might be missing speed, or they might be missing certain things. He's not missing anything, man, he's not missing anything. He's a complete athlete. He's one of the best I've ever worked with."
It was Wells who put on his Instagram intimating Chase had a done deal and while the pundits can debate the timeline, he was one of those out in front.
"He's happy. You can tell that. He's always the same. He never changes. But he's happy." Wells says. "He's really the same from a personality standpoint. But now that pressure is off him getting that deal done. Now his shoulders can drop a little bit and just really focus on his training and playing ball."
Wells is one of those LSU phenoms who has done so much so soon. He ran track for the Tigers ten years ago (where Bengals draft pick Bennie Brazell was his sprint and hurdler coach) and shot through the athlete trainer industry beginning as a graduate student with the pre-Burrow-Chase LSU football team.
As he moved up the ladder, Wells took Chase with him and has been working with him since his rookie year. Now he's the head man in a den of dreams headed by the LSU mafia.
Working out down there in Frisco, Tex., is the Triple Crown winner Chase. Vikings All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson starts up next week. There is Giants rookie receiver Malik Nabers. Jaguars rookie receiver Brian Thomas. Browns safety Grant Delpit. There's also Lions running back D'Andre Swift, Saints wide receiver Chris Olave, Giants running back Eric Gray. And teammate Cam Taylor-Britt, the Bengals cornerback getting plenty of elite looks.
Chase's sessions include, among others, Jefferson, Swift, Olave, Giants wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, Chargers wide receiver Jalen Reagor and Raiders wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr.
Chase and Jefferson in the same gym is like a video game speed dating the NFL record book. LSU's national championship running mates are now friendly pro rivals. Chase leads him in annual salary ($40 million-$35 million) while Jefferson is the league's all-time leader at 96.5 yards per game with Chase lurking at No. 2 with 87.5.
"They just raise the energy of the gym. Anybody else that's around," Wells says. "They raise the standard of what's happening around them. And it's like, okay, hey, these guys are working, so I need to be working my ass off too."
Chase walks in with the most big-play catches in the league during his career and peers notice.
"You feel it," Wells says. "You feel it. When you're that caliber of athlete, you definitely elevate the room. Nobody is star-struck. But you just take stuff seriously … He's extremely competitive with anybody that's in the room. And just curates the culture ... "
You have to take it seriously when you see the 6-foot, 205-pound Chase wrench about 300 pounds off the floor and power it to his chest a couple of times. Or thrash the squat machine for more than 400 pounds. Or reduce a tray of rice to smithereens with his hands to tighten the league's most reliable pair of vises.
"He's a unit, bro. He's just about faster than everybody else," Wells says. "He always tops out over 21, 22 miles an hour every time he's doing something from a speed emphasis. He's still strong as heck when it comes to our weight room work. He doesn't miss a beat with anything."
You can catch some whispers in the Bengals' weight room these days that Chase has the kind of desire and DNA that would allow him to play until he's 40. As it is, if he repeats the second four years with the numbers from his first four years, he'll be the Bengals all-time receiver with 783 catches and 10,850 yards at age 28.
Throw in a ninth year with the same numbers and he'll have more than 12,000 yards before he's 30.
Six days a week now for Chase until he sees Boese in the Bengals' Kettering Health Performance Center. In between the time he preps and shuts the door to the hyperbaric chamber, it's three hours.
But it's always a different three hours.
"It's strategic. Recovery days are built in there," Wells says. "You have your speed days, you have your position work days, you have your functional movement and corrective exercise days. So it's not like you're just hammering for six days. But you're being instructed for six days on what we're going to do as a plan."
The plan has no scoops. Just front-page sense. Mo Wells has a textbook on his daily sheet.
"Now you make an example out of him," Wells says. "You're going to have some genetic capability. This isn't what happens when you work hard. This is what happens when you're a hard worker."
