The Bengals picked up another arm for training camp when they claimed the contract of former Jaguars quarterback Matt Scott Friday afternoon. In direct fallout of the Blake Bortles' pick last week, the Jaguars cut Scott after they signed him as a free agent following last year's draft and put him on the practice squad.
The 6-3, 212-pound Scott is an excellent athlete that the Bengals ranked as a late-rounder. After losing the job to Nick Foles early in the 2009 season at Arizona, Scott ended up playing only in the 2012 season and had more than 3,000 yards passing with 21 touchdown passes and finished with six 300-yard passing games.
Scott has a tough road here. He'll be looking to get on tape during the preseason, but new backup Jason Campbell and fifth-rounder A.J. McCarron figure to get first dibs in the games behind Andy Dalton.
Scott comes out of Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., school and home of Bengals Pro Bowl WILL linebacker Vontaze Burfict.
TEZ FODDER: Speaking of Tez, despite a FOX report that the sides have made progress toward a long-term extension, a Burfict deal didn't look imminent heading into the weekend. The Bengals have been hammering away for an extension the past couple of weeks and indications late this week were they weren't near a deal. But if someone in the negotiations is the source for a story that says the gulf has narrowed, things could change. The Bengals' blueprint is to wrap up Burfict, quarterback Andy Dalton, and maybe others before tackling the mega deal for A.J. Green.
