Thomas Howard's memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Acts Full Gospel Church, 1034 66th Ave., Oakland, CA, 94621. Howard, a former Bengals linebacker, played five seasons for the Raiders before coming to Cincinnati in 2011. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Thomas Howard Foundation.
On Thursday, another former Bengal is laid to rest. Frank Chamberlin, who played five games for the Bengals in 2003, died of brain cancer last weekend at age 35.
Chamberlin, Vice President, Equity Trading at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods in New York, played for three seasons for Tennessee, the club that drafted him in 2000 out of Boston College in the fifth round before he ended his career in Houston in 2005. A mass is to be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul RC Church in Ramsey, N.J. Interment follows at Maryrest Cemetery in Chamberlin's native Mahwah. ANDERSON WAITLISTED:Willie Anderson's first bid for the Pro Football Hall of Fame ended when he wasn't among the 25 semifinalists announced Tuesday night.
Anderson, who went to four Pro Bowls while playing for the Bengals from 1996-2007, wasn't the lone first-time eligible tackle to make the list. That honor went to Walter Jones, who played for Seattle from 1997-2008. Jones joined former Bucs and Colts head coach Tony Dungy, former Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks, and former Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison as first-time eligibles on the list.
Only one other tackle made the semifinals and he played in the decade before Anderson and Jones, 13-year Washington standout Joe Jacoby.
Among the other 25 are head coaches Don Coryell and Jimmy Johnson and contributors Paul Tagliabue, Eddie DeBartolo and George Young, as well as former running backs Jerome Bettis, Terrell Davis and Roger Craig and wide receivers Tim Brown and Andre Reed. Cornerback Aeneas Williams, safety John Lynch, linebacker Kevin Greene and defensive end Charles Haley led the defense.
The list is pared to 15 with senior candidates Ray Guy and defensive end Claude Humphrey. The 17 finalists are announced Jan. 8, and the 2014 class is announced the day before the Super Bowl.
