Tom Crosby
Tom Crosby, who compiled a .645 winning percentage over the last 32 seasons as head football coach at Mariemont High School, was named Tuesday as the 2012 season winner of the Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award. The award has been given annually since 2002.
The award, given annually by the Bengals to an outstanding high school football coach in the region, includes a $5000 donation by the Bengals to the Mariemont athletic department.
Crosby, who has now retired as head coach, compiled a 215-118-1 record at Mariemont. His teams made 10 playoff appearances and finished as state runners-up in 1980 and 1995. His clubs were voted to seven Cincinnati city championships, and he was a seven-time Coach of the Year selection by the Cincinnati Enquirer and/or Cincinnati Post.
He was named 1995 Coach of the Year in Greater Cincinnati in an earlier Bengals-sponsored program, and he was presented with the award by Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Walsh at Riverfront Stadium. Also in 1995, he was named Ohio Coach of the Year in Division V. In 2010, he was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
"Tom fits a profile that we are proud to say has become characteristic of this award," said Bengals president Mike Brown. "In addition to being a highly successful coach on the field, he has been an integral and beloved part of his school system. He's been an athletic director and a principal, and he also has coached track, tennis and softball.
"He's an educator and teacher as well as a coach, and I know that my father, the namesake of this award, would be happy to see him recognized in this way."
Crosby is a native of Wyoming, Ohio and attended Wyoming High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Ashland University in 1974 and a Master of Arts from Western Michigan in 1975. He was head coach for two years at Cincinnati's Purcell High School before moving to Mariemont in 1978. His overall head coaching record is 222-131-1.
Tom and his wife Marcie have been married for 38 years, and the couple has two daughters, Emily and Sarah, and three grandchildren.
Crosby is the 12th winner of the Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award. Previous winners have been Bruce Kozerski of Holy Cross (2011 season), Steve Klonne of Moeller (2010), Troy Everhart of Winton Woods (2009), Dale Mueller of Highlands (2008), Jeff Giesting of Anderson (2007), Scott Datillo of Sycamore (2006), Steve Specht of St. Xavier (2005), Charles "Doc" Gamble of Withrow (2004), Doug Ramsey of Elder (2003), and Vince Suriano of Anderson and Mike Martin of Taft (2002 co-winners).
