Combine quick hits

INDIANAPOLIS - It is 8 a.m. Thursday morning on Opening Day of the NFL scouting combine and the first thing you see on the street is the three wise men of ESPN.com: John Clayton, Mike Sando and Mike Reiss.

Clayton opens with the Bengals' thread of the month: "Getting ready for T.O.?"

Welcome to Indy.

"No chance," you tell him.

"They've talked about it," he says.

"Yeah," you say. "Just long enough to say 'Get a calendar."

Owens turns 37 in December.

Just don't see it.

» John Thornton, former Bengals defensive tackle, king of social networking, friend to scribes everywhere, surfaced in the media room with "WLW" on his media badge. While helping out on a story on the dearth of young NFL-type tight ends, Thornton said hello to Lions coach Jim Schwartz passing through.

A little awkward. It's the first time since Thornton had seen him since the first day of last year's draft, when Thornton was in Schwartz's office turning down a chance to play for the year. Forget it now. Thornton might have trouble playing outside backer since he looked to be about 250 pounds, a good 35 off his playing weight.

» Steelers head honcho Kevin Colbert met the media fresh off nose tackle Casey Hampton's three-year, $21 million extension and indicated that backup running back Willie Parker and nickel back Deshea Townsend can test the market when it opens in eight days. So, too, safety Ryan Clark, it sounds like, but the Steelers would like Clark back.
